Jury LFF 2014

Charif Ghattas is an author, director, screenwriter and actor. He wrote no less than ten theater plays that were played between France and Lebanon. In 2014, he directed the creation of “Le paradis de Helki”, the new musical-instrumental show of French Lebanese artist Bachar Mar Khalifé. He is currently adapting two of his plays into film scripts: “Holiday Inn” with French director Tristan Aurouet and “Rotterdam la nuit” with the Mexican director Eduardo Sosa Soria. Since 2013, Charif has also been writing radio plays for France Inter.

Nadine Labaki is a Lebanese award-winning actress and filmmaker.

In 2007, her first film ‘’Caramel’’ premiered in Cannes and collected many awards worldwide, putting Labaki on Variety's 10 Directors to Watch List at the Sundance Film Festival.

In 2008, the French Ministry of Culture and Communication gave her the insignia of Chevalier in the Order of Arts and Letters.

Her second film “Where Do We Go Now? also premiered in Cannes in 2011. It won the Cadillac People’s Choice award at the Toronto film festival and was nominated for best foreign film at the Critics Choice Awards in Los Angeles.

In 2010, she starred in ‘’Stray Bullet’’ directed by Georges Hachem and in 2013 in ”Rock the Casbah” by Layla Marrakchi .

She will next appear in “Mea Culpa” directed by Fred Cavaye and in “La rançon de la gloire” directed by Xavier Beauvois and has just wrapped her segment ‘’ The Miracle’’ in the anthology film “Rio I Love You” that she directed and also stars in opposite Harvey Keitel.

Nadine was also a juror at the Venice, San Sebastian, and Sundance Film festivals and recently at the Tribeca Film Festival.

Nadine Labaki

Hernán Belón graduated from the E.N.E.R.C (Film School of the National Institute of Film and Audiovisual Arts). He holds a BA in advertising and worked professionally as a director, executive producer, editor and assistant director.

Between 1997 and 2009 he developed, directed and produced several documentaries (‘’Tierra de Refugia’’, ‘’The Tango of my life’’ …) and telefilms (‘’Preque y pague’’ …).

In 2010, Hernán directed his first fiction feature film, ‘’El Campo’’ and was selected in the Settimana della Critica at the Venice Film Festival and in several international competitions. It won the Special Prize of the Jury and Best Actor Prize for Leonardo Sbaraglia in Amiens (France), Best Director Prize in Mar del Plata (Argentina), Best Actress Prize for Dolores Fonzi in Malaga (Spain) and Punta del Este (Uruguay). The movie was released in Argentina, France, Italy, Uruguay and Norway.

In 2011 he directed ‘’Beirut – Buenos Aires – Beirut’’, a documentary produced by Al Jazeera Channel. It was selected in several festivals and won its first prize at the Latin Arab Festival (Argentina).

Currently, Hernán’s second fiction ‘’Sangre en la boca’’ is in development.

Hernan Belon

Born in Beirut in 1961, Pierre Abi Saab is a journalist and critic living and working between London, Paris and Beirut. He is specialized in Arab cinema, visual arts and theater, in the Maghreb and the Middle East, since the eighties and is a careful observer of literary, artistic and cultural life in the Arab world.

He was the founder and editor-in-chief of ZAWAYA (2001-2007), an upcoming magazine of Arab expression, edited in Beirut and dedicated to the living culture, and addressed essentially to a young audience in different Arab countries.

Co-founder in 2006 of AL-AKHBAR, a pan-Arab daily based in Beirut, he is currently its editor-in-chief, in charge of the Arts, Culture and Media service.
